Artist Statement

The power of the human memory is amazing. The memory is capable of storing every detail of a perfect day from the weather and the details of one's location to one's feelings and the feelings of those in which one is in contact. Over time some distant memories fade and some become more brilliant and increasingly embellished. The memory is not a perfect tool to store every meaningless detail of a person's life. It blends emotions with accurate details to generate an unrealistic but recognizable view often flavored by a brilliance of color.

Through a dedication to color and the fleeting quality of light, I endeavor to create a snapshot, not as a camera would take it, but as the mind would remember it - more luminous and rich in color with both fuzzy and sharp details. Often through the memory's alterations, a familiar scene is changed slightly, though still recognizable, it is as if the modification is only perceived as an unidentifiable difference, and it is this slightly occasionally uneasy difference that charges the picture.

My works are done on paper and solely with soft pastels, which I use as one would a pencil, on its side, crushed into a fine powder which is smeared onto the paper, and also in a jabbing motion in which small chunks are imbedded in the paper. After a quick sketch of the scene, I lay in base, using a handful of similar colors, and then I layer colors on top in order to add depth. I never know how each picture will look until it is finished.
